America's Most Wanted

When America hears these three words, most people think of the FBI’s 10 most wanted criminals. But a lesser known “Most Wanted” list is released each year – the most critical transportation safety improvements as established by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

While many Americans know the NTSB best for its work in airline, rail and traffic crash investigation, the agency is highly valued and well-known among traffic safety professionals for its work in transportation safety advocacy.

Each year the NTSB reviews its top 10 list of the most critically needed improvements that would reduce death and injury on our nation’s roads and railways and in our skies. Today, the NTSB revealed its 2016 Most Wanted List of Safety Improvements:

  • Reduce fatigue-related accidents
  • Improve rail transit safety oversight
  • Promote availability of collision avoidance technologies in highway vehicles
  • Strengthen occupant protection
  • Disconnect from deadly distractions
  • Prevent loss of control in flight in general aviation
  • Promote completion of rail safety initiatives
  • End substance impairment in transportation
  • Require medical fitness for duty
  • Expand the use of recorders to enhance transportation safety

While these recommendations are all of critical importance, Responsibility.org is most focused on ending substance impairment in transportation. For many years this recommendation was stated differently. In the past the focus has been on ending alcohol impairment in transportation. But for the last few years the NTSB has added drugs to its recommendation and grouped it all under “substance impairment” as drug-impaired driving is a growing problem. We look forward to our continued work with the NTSB to achieve this recommendation.

Responsibility.org has taken a leading role in preventing substance impairment in transportation and has partnered with the Governors Highway Safety Association, the National Safety Council, Students Against Destructive Decisions, FCCLA, Recording Artists Against Drunk Driving, National Organizations for Youth Safety, the National Sleep Foundation and the Consumer Healthcare Product Association to release our new End Impaired Driving PSA.
