Dr. H. Westley Clark and Dr. Katie Friedman Join Responsibility.org National Advisory Board

ARLINGTON, VAResponsibility.org announced today that psychiatrist, addiction medicine specialist, lawyer, and professor Dr. H. Westley Clark and board certified pediatrician Dr. Katie Friedman have joined its National Advisory Board. As members of the Responsibility.org National Advisory Board, Dr. Clark and Dr. Friedman will leverage their expertise and diversity to help develop and execute Responsibility.org’s mission to combat underage drinking and impaired driving, and empower adults to make responsible alcohol choices as part of a balanced lifestyle.

“Dr. Clark and Dr. Friedman’s experienced backgrounds will make them key assets in progressing Responsibility.org’s goal of educating consumers about responsible alcohol consumption,” said Maureen Dalbec COO & senior vice president of research and analysis for Responsibility.org. “We are thrilled they are joining our advisory board and look forward to collaborating with them and other members of the board to eliminate drunk driving and underage drinking, and encourage responsible decision making among adults who choose to drink.”

Dr. Clark brings over 40 years of experience working in public policy, medicine, law, and higher education, with a specialized focus in psychiatry and addiction medicine. Before his current role as the Dean’s Executive Professor of Public Health at Santa Clara University, Dr. Clark served as Director of the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment at the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) for 16 years from 1998 to 2014. In this role, he led the nation’s effort to make evidence-based addiction treatment more accessible to all Americans.

Prior to his work at SAMHSA, Dr. Clark provided psychiatric clinical care to our nation’s veterans for 14 years at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers and served as Health Counsel on the Committee on Labor and Human Resources in the United States Senate from 1981-1984.

“Responsibility.org’s mission aligns with the foundation of my career. I’m honored to join as an Advisory Board member and help make a difference on such an important issue,” said Dr. Clark. “There is much more we can do to educate consumers on healthy consumption habits when it comes to beverage alcohol, and I look forward to working with this mission-driven group of professionals to do my part.”

Dr. Friedman is a board-certified pediatrician, writer, spokesperson, and mother. Dr. Friedman completed her residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital at the University of Miami and currently practices pediatric emergency medicine in South Florida. Along with her sisters, she is also a co-founder of ForeverFreckled.com, where she serves as an educator and spokesperson.

Using her passion for preventive medicine and pediatric safety, Dr. Friedman has worked alongside several educational initiatives, such as KnowYourOTCs, Talk Early, and the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, to guide parents through obstacles of childhood safety, illness prevention, and pediatric medicine. In addition to her hospital work and writing obligations, she also serves as a medical correspondent for Lifetime’s Access Health and The Balancing Act.

“As a pediatrician, I know the importance of educating children and teenagers about healthy living and making good decisions, especially when it comes to alcohol,” said Dr. Friedman. “I look forward to using this knowledge to help shape future direction of the Responsibility.org National Advisory Board. Together, I know we can better equip parents and families with the skills and knowledge they need to navigate conversations about responsible consumption habits.”

“We welcome both Dr. Clark and Dr. Friedman to the board with great enthusiasm and look forward to witnessing the impact of their contributions,” added Dalbec.

In their appointments, Dr. Clark and Dr. Friedman will join seven other existing board members, bringing the group total to nine. To learn more about all National Advisory Board Members, click here.
