Dr. Clark brings over 40 years of experience working in public policy, medicine, law, and higher education, with a specialized focus in psychiatry and addiction medicine. Before his current role as the Dean’s Executive Professor of Public Health at Santa Clara University, Dr. Clark served as Director of the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment at the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) for 16 years from 1998 to 2014. In this role, he led the nation’s effort to make evidence-based addiction treatment more accessible to all Americans.
Prior to his work at SAMHSA, Dr. Clark provided psychiatric clinical care to our nation’s veterans for 14 years at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers and served as Health Counsel on the Committee on Labor and Human Resources in the United States Senate from 1981-1984.
