Pledge to make a responsible decision on the 4th

The Fourth of July is a celebration of America’s independence.  On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was approved by the Continental Congress, setting the 13 colonies on the road to freedom as a sovereign nation. Sadly, this fun and patriotic American holiday celebrated with parades, fireworks and backyard barbecues, will also be marked with tragedy on our roadways. 

The holiday is one of the deadliest in terms of drunk driving crashes with 161 people killed in drunk driving traffic crashes in 2011 during the Fourth of July weekend — that’s almost three lives lost for each of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence.

As we celebrate this Independence Day, we reflect on how our Founding Fathers enshrined the importance of independence and freedom for all.  And let’s not forget what freedom truly is. In its purest form, freedom is the ability to make choices. That means each of us has the ability to make both good and bad choices.
